Second Harvest Hero Day

I have always wanted to be a hero, and today was my day, and I had the outfit too!

Second Harvest is the largest Food Rescue program in Canada.  Since 1985, they have been providing donated food and surplus food (that would otherwise go to waste) to the people who need it the most.  They provide this onto community agencies in Toronto.  At this time, they currently provide this much needed assistance to over 220 social service agencies.

Amazingly, in the last 12 months alone, Second Harvest has provided fresh food to those in the greatest need by delivering over eight million pounds of food, that is something quite spectacular.

Below, I adorn my green Hero mask at the Bloor-Yonge station in Downtown Toronto.

I knew I had some sort of superpowers, I could just feel it, sometimes it is just that, you feel it but you can’t see it..that is until I looked at this photo and realised why I could feel so much energy and power in my right hand, yep you guessed it, my blindingly powerful light saber!

Some of the fantastic people I met on this day, this bunch were from my first shift, I think we all suit green don’t you think?

There were two main highlights to my day, other than meeting some wonderful, polite and kind people throughout the day.

My first highlight was during my first shift at the Bloor-Yonge station where I was standing in front of an escalator where passengers were coming up.

I heard this little boy shout from his buggy to his mum ‘mom look, its a superhero’, without thinking I did a little run so that my cape was in the air, I stopped and looked back where I saw the boy with his mouth open, his mother laughed, donated some money and I gave him a small pin badge that said ‘Second Harvest Hero’ on it and told him that he too is a super hero, he was very, very happy!

The second highlight of my day was on my second shift near the Eaton Centre (the photo above).  A man approached me, he seemed to be wearing construction clothes, he came to me smiling and said to me that today was a good day and he has come into some money. He pulled out four $50 notes and gave them to me, he had a huge smile on his face as he disappeared down the stairs in front of me!

It was a very fulfilling day for me and something that is for a great cause, to highlight this, one of the sad facts is that over 40% of the recipients of the food distributed by Second Harvest are children and youth.  Hopefully the future will be better for all in 2016.

    1. Thank you my dear friend, I am flattered, it was a great day.

Just to let you and the others who have been asking me about snow know, I am currently in Montreal (we are doing a short road trip) lots and lots of snow after a couple of extreme weather warnings, over 25cm of snow, very strong winds and very poor visibility in some areas, it is absolutely stunning, posts to come…take care
