Technicolor Niagara Falls

Every time I have been to Niagara Falls, I fall in love with the sheer power, beauty and awesome respect that these falls demand.  In the daytime it really is splendid to behold how wonderful this place is and I end up standing there, observing, reflecting and daydreaming about the awe and magnificence of one my favourite places in the world.

Yoho National Park, Takakkaw Falls

(My solo road trip of western Canada – Saturday 3rd October)

Onwards and upwards as they say.  I left the stunning village of Field to continue on through Yoho National Park, I was really happy with how much I did yesterday, I got through quite a bit, it was really a jam packed day:  Mount Revelstoke National Park, Glacier National Park’s spectacular drive, Town of Golden, Yoho National Park: the mesmerising Emerald Lake and the fascinating Natural Bridge, and the gorgeous village of Field…phew!

One of the main highlights of Yoho National Park is Takakkaw Falls. Fortunate timing as this place is closed throughout the winter from October until June, the main reason being high risk of avalanches in this area.  You certainly get an idea of why you would not risk trying to traverse up here during the harsher conditions just through the drive that brings you here.

I hope you get some idea of what the drive is like, I can tell you, it was a fantastic drive, tremendous views, rugged landscape and some of the switchbacks, as you can see below, are very tricky and keep you alert. Its pretty spectacular, the height of the falls is over 1200ft, but for me more impressive is the free fall of water which is over 800ft.

Takakkaw Falls are one of the highest falls in Canada.  In the Cree language, the word Takakkaw means “magnificent” which aptly fits a description for these falls.  From the moment you catch a glimpse of these falls from a distance as you are driving, to when you walk towards it as you leave your car, until you get so close that you feel the wonderful spray gently sprinkling itself all over you, describing the falls as magnificent is a good place to start.

Jasper National Park: Sunwapta Falls

(My solo road trip of western Canada – Thursday 24th September)

I loved this place, there were so many aspects of this ladscape that were very cool and original.  For example, the pathways that were interwoven with the roots of the trees was absolutely amazing, no steps needed here, nature was providing its own staircase for the benefit and comfort of its guests…tread with gratitude.  Another thing I really liked about this place was the island of trees that was being caressed by water around its sides  with the magnificence of the mountains in the backdrop.  Although the sound of the water was refreshing and soothing, my favourite aspect of this place was the formation and the setting of the trees and their roots.

Jasper National Park: Tangle Creek and Stutfield Glacier

(My solo road trip of western Canada – Thursday 24th September)

I read about the Tangle Falls (Tangle Creek) and the description of it stated that it was a series of mini waterfalls that interlinked together, it was if they were braiding a hair style out of water, it was so relaxing to be at these  waterfalls as they were different levels of sounds of water depending on where you stood, very nice.

Stutfield Glacier was very different from the Athabasca Glacier but still beautiful in its own sense, it was another landscape that was different from others I had seen so far.  The last photo was special at the moment I saw it,  I captured this first in my rear view mirror, I stopped on the side to take this, it was a scene of its own, not sure the photo does justice to what I actually saw, beautiful nonetheless. The sun, different colours of the trees, the grey and white clouds, the empty road and the snow capped mountain made it a captivating image and memory.
